it’s all about the coconut

Posted by & filed under Nourish Organics.

I’ve been meaning for a long time to show you some of the fun ins and outs of what we do at Nourish. One of my favorite products to make is the Organic Coconut Balm. Every single ingredient is the best available and every ingredient serves an important, very useful purpose. May I show you?

Okay, see this?

Know what it is?

Probably. It’s organic coconut oil. It’s solid at room temperature, and it’s really good stuff. There are tons of great uses for coconut oil (see this awesome list of 80 great uses for coconut oil by Health Impact News), and I like to think that I know one of the best :)

The other day a few of you asked me to tell you more about the infusions we do to make our products at Nourish. Of course I can’t tell you all of our secrets, but I would love to share the process because I honestly think it helps to understand what goes into a product to understand what makes it great.

So, we start with the organic coconut oil. So moisturizing. And yes, it looks a little like Crisco. Thanks, Ryan for pointing that out. But, when you mix herbs in with this coconut oil (in our case, we use organic plantain leaves and organic chickweed because of their healing properties) at a low temperature over a long time, then strain them out through cheesecloth, it comes out green and good. Better.

Now you can see that it’s come back to room temperature. I love this photo. It’s just lovely.

Here it is, all infused with the goodness from the herbs.

Isn’t it cool to see what heat and time can do to extract the goodness from the herbs and infuse it into the oil? This is science, y’all. This is why we keep getting emails from folks telling us how excited they are about finally finding something that helps sooth their own or their kids’ eczema.

Then, we add more goodness to the organic, infused coconut oil. We add shea butter and beeswax and vitamin e oil and other goodies to make it just right.

Then we bottle it up for y’all in lots of little jars and let it cool. Coconut balm making day is a sweet-smelling day in my house.

There is so much goodness in these jars, y’all.

Next, labels. See that gorgeous USDA Organic seal on there? Have I mentioned that we are officially official and all grown up? Yep, all of Nourish’s products are certified organic. A thousand hurrahs!

And then, those happy little 2oz bundles of Organic Coconut Balm sit on our shelf (not for long!) and wait to be summoned by one of y’all. We’ve been getting requests for larger tubs because folks are going through it so quickly. (Thanks for the input… we’ll see what we can do!)

And that is my little peek into our happy little shop these days.

I need to buy some more body wash. The peppermint that I have been stingy-ly (that’s not a real word, I know it) hiding and rationing since December is on its last few pumps and I need to try the coconut! I use the peppermint as a facewash and can I just tell you that my skin has never looked better? I so rarely get breakouts, and my skin isn’t too try or oily. I never thought I could have that without using a lotion/toner/cleanser combo, and I do.

Enough pontificating — time to order!
